You were created for much more
That day, many years ago, I sat on the passenger’s side of my aunt’s car and tilted the mirror so as to see my fine face. It’d had been a hectic day and I needed to be sure that I was still maintaining beauty.
Satisfied with what I saw reflected back at me in the mirror, I proceeded to fiddle with my phone as I waited for my aunty to finish her “service-after-service” meetings in the church hall.
Not long afterwards, she was back in the car and started it. As she tried to pull out of the car park, she noticed it.
Grumbling and irritated, she yelled,
“These children have tampered with my side mirror again. How many times would I warn them not to…”
The anger in her voice made me sit quietly, frozen to my seat. I was not sure all those anger oozing out of the older woman was befitting for just a mere tilt of a side mirror.
Moreover, it was just a mirror to the side of the car, right?
Placed there for beautification.
What is the big deal with tilting it?
Who cares whether the mirrors are upright or tilted anyway?
My aunty seemed to hear my thoughts as she said, “these mirrors are built to help me see my rear. They are not on the car for fashion.”
Really?
I couldn’t believe it.
I listened on as she explained the importance of the side mirrors to the driver of a vehicle.
Before that time, I’d seen some taxis without side mirrors. I had even seen many with almost non-existent mirrors. I never thought side mirrors served any use except for beautifying the car.
It struck me in that moment.
So by merely tilting the side mirrors of a car in the wrong direction, the driver may innocently ignore an upcoming motorcyclist and… hit him… even kill him… or hit a bigger vehicle and crash?
Ah!
I never imagined the side mirror to be that useful.
I immediately understood that the fact that I used the car’s side mirror as a face mirror to check my beauty out didn’t eliminate the original reason for which the manufacturer made it
Gbam!
That was a redefining moment for me.
My life is like that mirror.
The fact that I went to school to study to be an engineer, a filmmaker, a doctor, an author, a teacher or a chef, does not eliminate the original intention for which God created me.
This original intention for my creation is to serve the Lord and point people to him.
It then means that if all I am doing with the side mirrors (the investments of God) on my car (life) is merely to look at my beautiful face; if I do not know that the side mirrors (these divine investments) are important for the safety of my (life’s) journey, I am undermining the essence of their existence.
Hey… never be distracted so much so that you forget that the original intention of God for your life is to serve Him and point people to Him.
Do not subject your entire life’s essence to merely being a teacher , doctor, actor, wife, husband or human.
Do not undermine your capabilities.
Do not undermine your life.
Wake up, Watchman.
Wake up.
